Christmas is a great time to take vacations irrespective of your career path, most especially for those living in the west. The harsh winter storms inhibits outdoor activities and pose a health threat no one should be questioned for taking time off for themselves and to be with family. Vacationing during this time of the year to warmer destinations is the norm and as a dapper man, you wouldn’t want to go just anywhere simply because of higher temperatures but somewhere fun filled with ambiance. South America is one of those places that never disappoints, but hay! what if you fly to South America for winter break holidays festivity but the city you are in just doesn’t seem festive enough?
Then you should consider a quick trip to Gramado, in Brazil. The city is close to the border of most South American countries, meaning you are one short plane ride away from finding the Christmas spirit you may have thought you lost. The city is full of touristic attractions and is a great place to see the best of Christmas in South America.
Every year the city has a big celebration and decoration all around called, Natal Luz (Christmas light) – which besides all of the Christmas plays and parades you can watch around the city – there’s a big ceremony to turn on all of the Christmas lights’ of the city starting every day at 8:30 p.m. downtown.
Rua Coberta, or covered street, is as the name explain a covered street downtown which is a year-round touristic attraction. There you can find a lot of different restaurants, bars, and even a bookshop.
This time of the year, the ceiling is completely decorated with Christmas lights and holiday decorations which makes it the perfect place to have dinner, or hang out at night.
This street is also right in front of where the lights’ ceremony takes place.
Aldeia do Papai Noel
The Aldeia do Papai Noel (Santa’s Village) is a great place to go to if you are on Christmas vacation with kids. The place is full of fake snow and Santas everywhere. At Santa’s Village the kids can take pictures and visit all of the attractions such as Santa’s house, ride the monorail, see the reindeers, walk though the snow land, visit the toys factory and more.
Avenida Borges de Medeiros
The Borges de Medeiros Avenue is the most Christmas decorated avenue in town. Located in the heart of the city, it is a great place to take a walk at and enjoy all of the picture perfect places.
Reino do Chocolate
The Chocolate Kingdom is a great place for children to learn the process of making chocolate and even getting the opportunity to make it themselves. The interactive tour is made up by riddles that unlock talking characters which explain the history of chocolate throughout the years.
At the end of the tour, you can go to the chocolate factory coffee shop for hot cocoa while sitting in cup-shaped chairs and enjoying the best view of the city’s forest.
This “crooked street” is the perfect photo opportunity in the city. The irregular street is always full of tourist taking pictures and one of the most famous streets of the city. It is a smaller version of Lombard Street in San Francisco.
The South of Brazil was colonized by Germany and is something you can notice by its architecture. A very special place for kids in Gramado is the embodiment of all of that.
The “Enchanted Germany”, a tiny village where both kids and adults can ride Rapunzel’s tower and enjoy lunch a mini Germany town is an attraction not to miss.
Mundo Gelado (cold world) is a -20ºC (-4ºF) museum during the daytime – where you can take pictures with a fake frozen manatee, Olaf from the Disney movie Frozen and many more sculptures. During night time, it becomes an ice bar, with loud music and cool drinks.
